Working Conditions

This trade requires extensive work from ladders and scaffolds at varying heights. There is constant bending, kneeling, and extensions of the arms, shoulders, and upper torso.

Apprenticeship Training Period

Bridge and Drywall Taper Program is 3 years of instruction and 4500 “on the job” training hours.

Commercial Painter is 4 years of instruction and 6000 “on the job” training hours.

Glazier Program is 4 years and 8000 “on the job” training hours.

Classroom Instruction is Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. one week (40 hours) per month during the months of January, February, March, and April.

Related Instruction and Method

Apprenticeship:  Classroom Instruction consists with practical instruction and Health and Safety courses.

Journeyman:  Upgrading and Health and Safety classes are available throughout the year at the Western New York Training Center. The Finishing Trades Institute offers its members opportunities for obtaining certifications such as the Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC) certification program for a Coating Application Specialist (CAS) and Welding Certification Program.

Qualifications

Must be 17 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, and a valid New York State Driver’s License with reliable transportation.

Probationary Period

One year for the Painter and Glazier Programs and nine months for the Bridge and Taper Programs (25% of program length), in addition to the completion of their first year of class instruction.

Tools

Apprentice must purchase 5-IN-1 scraper, drywall taping tools, painter pants and work boots. Average cost ranges between $200 and $250.

Wages and Fringe Benefits

Commercial Painter

Journeyman:     $24.68 hourly + $19.91 fringes

Apprentice:       $12.34 hourly + $2.07 fringes w/ raise progression every 750 hours

Drywall Taper

Journeyman:     $25.18 hourly + $19.91 fringes

Apprentice:       $12.59 hourly + $2.07 fringes w/ raise progression every 750 hours

Bridge Painter

Journeyman:     $35.70 hourly + $21.35 fringes

Apprentice:       $17.85 hourly + $3.07 fringes w/ raise progression every 750 hours

Glazier

Journeyman:     $24.60 hourly + $16.92 fringes

Apprentice:       $9.84 hourly + $6.03 fringes w/ raise progression every 1000 hours

Apprentice – Health and Pension only

Union Dues

Initiation Fee for Apprentices

$25.00 plus three months dues

Initiation Fee for Journeyman

$50.00 plus one years dues

Monthly dues start at $25.00 and vary depending on the trade and local.

Recruitment for Next Class

1st Tuesday of every month from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
