Working Conditions
This trade requires extensive work from scaffolds at varying heights. There is substantial exposure to sunlight and constant bending, kneeling and extensions of the arms, shoulders and upper torso. Often hazardous conditions due to heights and vapors from paints and solvents.
Apprenticeship Training Period
Four years or until 8,000 hours is achieved.
Related Instruction and Method
Classroom Instruction:
Monday – Friday, 7:30am – 4:00pm
40 hours per week @ four weeks
1 week in January, February, March and April
Qualifications
Must be 18 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, score satisfactorily on the New York State General Aptitude Test Battery, and have a driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Probationary Period
One year.
Tools
Apprentice must purchase 5-IN-1 scraper, drywall taping tools, painter pants and work boots. Average cost ranges between $200 and $250.
Current Journeyman Rate
$21.64 per hour.
Apprentice Wage Progression Schedule
1st 1,000 hours within a 6-month period:
50% of Journeyman Rate – $10.82
2nd 1,000 hours within same period:
55% of Journeyman Rate – $11.90
3rd 1,000 hours within same period:
60% of Journeyman Rate – $12.98
4th 1,000 hours within same period:
65% of Journeyman Rate – $14.07
5th 1,000 hours within same period:
70% of Journeyman Rate – $15.15
6th 1,000 hours within same period:
75% of Journeyman Rate – $16.23
7th 1,000 hours within same period:
80% of Journeyman Rate – $17.31
8th 1,000 hours within same period:
90% of Journeyman Rate – $19.48

$37,000 to $43,000 Journeyman*
* Estimates are based upon average hours worked, which may vary from year to year
Fringe Benefits
Apprentice – Health & Pension.
Journeyman – Health, Pension, Annuity, education and Vacation.
Both eligible for Health Benefits after working 1,000 hours.
Union Dues
Initiation Fee, $50.00 + one years dues. Monthly dues $26.00. Working dues (Apprentice), 3% of gross earnings. (Journeyman), 5% of gross earnings.

1st Tuesday of every month, 5pm to 7pm
