Working Conditions
All ironworkers require a full day of strenuous physical labor. An ironworker will climb on building erection jobs, bridges, wall reinforcing jobs, ornamental work sheeting and rigging jobs as well as welding structural jobs. One must be constantly alert and pay full attention to all safety requirements.
Apprenticeship Training Period
Four years.
Related Instruction and Method
200 hours per school year, Saturday classes, September to June – five and one half hours from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Qualifications
Must be 18 years old, have a high school diploma or GED. Open enrollment on the first Monday of every month 8 a.m. to 12 noon.
Probationary Period
Six months.
Tools
Apprentice must purchase $300 worth of tools.
Current Journeyman Rate
$20.95 per hour.
Apprentice Wage Progression Schedule
1st year 60% of Journeyman Rate, $16.03.
2nd year 65% of Journeyman Rate, $17.03.
3rd year 70% of Journeyman Rate, $18.03.
4th year 75% of Journeyman Rate, $19.03.
Estimated Annual Earning
$20,000-$25,000 *
* Estimates are based upon average hours worked, which may vary from year to year.

Union Dues
Initiation fee, $250.
Monthly Dues
Journeyman – $28.
Apprentice – $26.50.
Working Dues
Journeyman – $2.07.
Apprentice – $1.57.
